Surrounded by Europe’s big-name nations, Slovakia is often overlooked. But for those in-the-know, this under-the-radar stunner rewards with forest-carpeted countryside, mirror-still glacier lakes, and the snowy peaks of the High Tatras.
Take on the Tatras
The impressive Tatra Mountains take centre stage in Slovakia and they’re one challenge every walker wants to tick-off the list. For photo-worthy walks, hikes, and climbs, they’re tough to beat.
The crowning glory of the Carpathian Mountain range rises to heights of up to 2,000 metres, and over 300 peaks form a formidable – but beautiful – border with neighbouring Poland. Our walking holidays in Slovakia let you bag a hatful of Tatras peaks including Chopok and Dumbier – the two highest summits of the Low Tatras – and the High Tatras tallest point, Velka Svistovka, at 2037 metres.
Tatra National Park is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, so you can expect walks that line-up sparkling glacial lakes and ancient woodland. There’s a slew of wildlife-spotting opportunities, too, given that the Tatra chamois, wild lynx, and Carpathian brown bear are just a few of the animals that call the park home.
Freedom to explore
When you’re not out scaling Slovakia’s heights, there are easier walks that mix things up with an assortment of fun ways to get around. Enjoy an electric train ride through alpine forests and rugged mountain passes, take in wow-factor views courtesy of a cable car ride over the borderlands, and feel the thrill of a white-water rafting experience on the Dunajec River.
What’s more, all our walking holidays here include a multi-use Tatras train ticket, so you’ll have ample time to visit traditional High Tatras villages like Tatranska Lomnica, culture-rich cities such as Poprad, or stop by UNESCO-listed Spis Castle. It’s a great opportunity to sample the nation’s hearty food and learn about the culture of the fiercely proud Slovakian highland people.
