Walking & sightseeing holidays in Central America

Though it’s got stiff competition from its neighbours to the north and south, Central America can certainly hold its own when it comes to knockout scenery, rich history, and intriguing culture.

On the mainland, Costa Rica takes centre stage. This tiny republic packs a huge punch when it comes to fog-shrouded rainforests, smoking volcanoes, and amazing wildlife. Over one quarter of the nation is protected nature reserve and there’s around 500,000 animal and plant species across its 30 national parks.

And who could forget Cuba? Just a skip across the Caribbean Sea, this time-trapped tropical island has seen colonisers come and go, dictators overthrown, and some of the Cold War’s most dramatic events played out on its shores. Despite all that, Cuban life carries on to a soundtrack of swaying palms, traditional salsa music, and the satisfying clink of a glass of rum or two. From the classic American cars, colourful architecture, and crumbling colonial grandeur of UNESCO-listed Havana to the tobacco fields and untouched tropical landscapes of Viñales, this is a land of dizzying contradictions – all of which make it so appealing.
