Walking holidays in Costa Rica

Located at the exact centre of the Americas, Costa Rica is the tiny republic that packs a huge punch when it comes to fog-shrouded rainforests, smoking volcanoes, amazing wildlife, and environmentally-friendly tourism. Over one quarter of the nation is protected nature reserve and there’s over 500,000 animal and plant species to be found across its 30 national parks. And did we mention the weather’s pretty good, too.

Experience smouldering volcanoes and diverse wildlife

Our Costa Rica walking holidays take you through the most wow-worthy volcanic landscapes of this ecologically-rich wonderland. You’ll trek into the jungle searching for brightly-coloured birds, sloths, and big cats inside the 20,000-acre Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge. You’ll also get to sail down the rainforest-fringed Rio Frio river as chattering monkeys look on from the trees.

Other highlights include the five thundering cascades of La Paz waterfall, a visit to a hummingbird observation centre, and a coffee-tasting experience (Costa Rica is one of the world’s premier coffee producers).

Costa Rica’s rarest wildlife lives in the uppermost reaches of the rainforest. So a trip to Arenal Volcano National Park gives you the chance to come as close as possible to tropical birds like the toucan – Costa Rica’s national bird. Cross dizzyingly-high sky bridges in the jungle canopy to marvel at the array of species that live there – it’s prime nature spotting territory. And with a trek along the Arenal 1968 trails, you’ll pass the smoking vents and fumaroles of the park’s namesake volcano.
