Walking holidays in the USA

Sky high buildings, wide-open spaces, and colossal portions of food – North America lives by the bigger is better approach to life.  So it’s no surprise that our walking holidays in the USA serve up a continent-sized stack of adventures. You’ll visit world famous national parks, see extraordinary wildlife, and tick off landscapes that stretch from the icy climes of Alaska to the cowboy-trodden trails of America’s Great Plains.

Scenery on a grand scale

Like a Las Vegas headline act, the Grand Canyon tops the bill for showstopping scenery and the views will stay with you long after your holiday is over. A vast valley of red-hued rock, broken only by the mighty Colorado River, it’s one of the world’s seven natural wonders. Elsewhere, you can feel the heat of the hottest place on Earth in the surreal landscapes of Death Valley or spend time in Yellowstone National Park to see Old Faithful – a volcanic geyser spurting boiling water high into the air – and the impossibly bright colours of the mineral-rich Grand Prismatic Springs.

The American Rockies pack a punch in the natural beauty stakes, too. Think thundering waterfalls, sparkling lakes and ancient forest studded with snowy peaks. Be on the lookout for bald eagles flying overhead and wild bison roaming the plains as you follow in the footsteps of American pioneers and Wild West legends like Buffalo Bill.

In the far north, Alaska is an icy, untamed wilderness home to black bears, moose and caribou. And as America’s biggest state, once-in-a-lifetime experiences are in plentiful supply. Come face-to-face with enormous glaciers on the Harding Icefield Trail, ride the scenic Alaskan railroad to Anchorage and visit Denali National Park – six-million acres of forest-carpeted lowlands, arctic tundra, and ice-capped mountains.
